Research Associate in Tribo-Acoustic Sensors

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with The Leonardo Centre for Tribology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is leading international research group in tribology, and is committed to strengthening its position at the forefront of the discipline. As part of this, an opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate who will work as part of a team on an EPSRC funded project to develop the field of Tribo-Acoustic Sensors. This is a new field where we will be using principles of ultrasonic non-destructive testing to build sensors and devices to measure real machine element in machines, like engines, wind turbines, and power transmission. This will involve designing the ultrasonic pulsing and sensing systems; building prototypes, and trying them out in lab and field settings. You will help with building a team, supporting PhD students and interacting with industrial sponsors and collaborators.

The successful candidate will have a good honours degree in Engineering or Physics and have completed, or be nearing completion, a PhD in Engineering or a relevant discipline (or equivalent experience). They will have significant research experience in some aspects of ultrasonic NDT, signal processing, and condition monitoring; especially with practical experience of building and implementing sensor systems. This experience should also demonstrate evidence of time management skills and project delivery, experience of working in a collaborative research environment, and a record of academic publication.
