About acoustics

The acoustics industry contributes £4.6 billion to UK economy annually, employing over 16,000 people.

Acoustics is the generation, manipulation, control, transmission and detection of sound and vibration. It plays an essential role in developing some of the most widely-used technologies in everyday life, an underpinning technology spanning many disciplines.

A survey carried out by UKAN in conjunction with the UK’s Institute of Acoustics (IOA) on the impact of the acoustic industry in 2019 was the first to identify the size and importance of the UK’s acoustic industry. Driven by 750 companies, mostly SMEs in the North West, Scotland and the South East, the industry plays a vital role in enabling some of the most widely-used technologies in markets such as healthcare, aerospace, construction and defence to name but a few.
