Interested in underwater systems or telecoms? This PhD studentship forms part of a collaboration with Sonardyne to develop a world leading capability in high data rate underwater communication for collecting information from underwater vehicles and sensors. It brings together expertise and hardware from a world leading company with innovative research from the ISC group in the School of Engineering and expose the student to a unique mix of leading-edge research and product development.
The overall aim of the PhD position is to develop a new paradigm in underwater communications, namely, extremely high data rate (EHDR) acoustic communications. The project will provide a step change in the achievable data rate through intelligent control of the link between the surface vessel and the submersible. This is important because the oceanic channel is one of the most destructive to communication links due to the impact of severe multi-path propagation and Doppler shift. This will be achieved through:
- Developing and experimentally verifying new modulation schemes.
- Investigating high performance digital signal processing methods such as advanced equalisation.
- Experimentally demonstrating real world integrated testbeds in sub-sea communication links.
- Interaction with Sonardyne International Ltd including a three-month placement.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to travel to international conferences and meetings, and will be provided with soft skills and personal training.
