ASK THE INSTRUMENTATION EXPERT
‘Question Time’ for Acousticians
Wednesday 16 February 2022
1200 by Zoom

The Measurement and Instrumentation group of the IOA are holding an ‘Ask the Instrumentation Expert’ panel session on 16 February 2022 at 12:00 via Zoom. You will have direct access to measurement specialists and leading experts from many of the sound and vibration equipment manufacturers.

No matter the measurement task, if you don’t get the planning right, you won’t get the measurements right! This special event will look at every aspect of setting up and sorting out noise measurement tasks. This might be anything from selecting the right parameters without over-doing it, choosing time-history periods that fit the task, audio recording and all its pitfalls, powering the kit so it lasts long enough or what post-processing you might need to do and what needs setting up for that.

We will happily talk about any type of noise or vibration measurement task, so you might be struggling with a wind-farm noise measurement, a railway ground-borne vibration project or even a tricky workplace noise assessment. If you have a burning question, this is your chance to get the answer. No question too big or too small and we guarantee that your question won’t be a stupid one – you’d be surprised!

The Panel

  • Simon Bull (M&I Committee Member and Session Chair), MD of Castle Group Ltd
  • John Shelton (M&I Group Chair), MD of ACSoft Ltd
  • Mark Dowie, (M&I Committee Member), Brüel & Kjær

Your Questions

You can send your questions in advance, or you can pose them on the day via the chat feature in Zoom. Topics can be anything you like but may include sensor choice, interpreting standards, detailed explanation of a particular parameter or pretty much anything else around the topic of planning a measurement session.

The session will start with a brief presentation from John Shelton, chair of the measurement and instrumentation group of the IOA, followed by an introduction to the panel and a question-and-answer session, chaired by Simon Bull, who will guide the session until time or questions run out!

Panel Bio’s

Simon Bull

I am managing director and proprietor of Castle Group Ltd and have worked here for the past 29 years. I joined Castle after completing a degree in Business Studies at Leeds Met and I bought the business in 2014. My main area of expertise is with the development of noise and vibration measurement equipment, and I am a member of the Institute of Acoustic and sit on the Measurement and Instrumentation group.

John Shelton

John Shelton is an experienced acoustician specialising in instrumentation.  He is the Managing Director of AcSoft having set up the business in 1994 following experience working developing loudspeakers at Goodmans, and later working with Bruel & Kjaer UK as an area sales engineer. John has specialisms in the measurement of sound intensity and source location techniques, as well as managing technical sales of instrumentation across the UK.   John is an active member of the Institute of Acoustics and sits on several national committees and working groups on measurement & instrumentation and is the Chair of the IOA Measurement and instrumentation group.

Tony Higgins

Tony Higgins has over 30 years of regulatory and consultancy experience dealing with noise and nuisance issues.  Tony worked as an Environmental Health Manager for Telford & Wrekin Council for over 20 years, and as a consultant specialising in environmental pollution (including noise and nuisance) for the last 15 years.  Tony is a Member of the Institute of Acoustics and an elected member of the IOA Measurement & Instrumentation Group.

Mark Dowie BSc (Hons) MIOA

Mark has worked for Bruel & Kjaer in various positions since 2004 and is currently an application specialist. This role includes understanding customers current and future needs across all aspects of noise and vibration and working with the development team to ensure that Bruel & Kjaer products are suitable for real-life applications. He also provides application training for customers, particularly in environmental noise. In 2010 Mark became a member of the Institute of Acoustics and joined the measurement and instrumentation group in 2014.

Martin Armstrong

Martin has been involved with measurement and instrumentation since 1954.  Firstly at NGTE Pyestock, then Derritron, followed by LDS and finally Bruel and Kjaer.  He retired from B&K in 2001 but was retained as a consultant on vibration for a further 15 years.  Martin is a mechanical engineer and an electronic engineer.  Martin has been on BSI and ISO committees for over 30 years on Mechanical Vibration covering calibration and human response to vibration.

Charles Greene

Charles has accumulated almost 25 years of experience in supplying and supporting sound and vibration measurement instrumentation. NTi Audio, 01dB  and Bruel & Kjaer are all companies Charles has had the pleasure of working with including a 4 year spell in Denmark working as product manager of the B&K sound level meter range. Although almost all aspects of sound measurement and analysis are fascinating Charles would probably admit that building and room acoustics are a particular passion of his.

John Campbell is a co-founder of Campbell Associates who specialise in the sale, hire and calibration of acoustic and vibration instrumentation.  John has been a member of the IOA for 17 years and works on the committee for the Measurement and Instrumentation group and Eastern Branch.
