Professional/research interests:
I'm a microbiologist with special interest in soil microbial ecology. Soil microbes underpin soil function, however to understand their roles and learn best approaches to land mangement we need to analyse their actions in relation to other biotic and abiotic factors. For this reason, I am also interested in the landscape-scale monitoring of ecosystem function and biodiversity - for which eco-acoustics has great potential.

What would you like UKAN to do for you?
Help to develop tools for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem function, provide networking opportunities and share expertise.

How would you like to contribute to UKAN?
I manage land and work with landowners who would be interested in to assist research on eco-acoustics by making land available for it. I think that my experience in microbial ecology including data management and analyses has some relevance to data management for acoustics and I would be interested to be involved in defining approaches to data management.

Equipment:
At university of Derby we have a well equipped acoustics department, including hemianechoic chamber. I don't belong to this group so don't know the facilities in detail. We have aquatic research facilities and a long term ecology field research site.

Software or numerical codes:
I don't have anything to offer here but I do believe that some methods of microbial ecology could be applied beneficially to the analysis of soundscapes, and would be happy to discuss with anyone interested.
