Beyond hearing aids: the possible future of acoustic augmented reality

Abstract
Hearing aids have been around for decades, and they are the most successful intervention to mitigate the effect of hearing loss. But…is this going to remain the same in the years to come? Are we still going to heavily rely on tiny processors which are not freely programmable by the user, with very limited connectivity and very high costs? Acoustic augmented reality may contribute to closing the gap for people with hearing loss through multimodal sensor integration, leveraging extensive current artificial intelligence research, and machine-learning frameworks. The proposed research will explore such potential, designing and evaluating novel technologies as a frontend to current and future hearing solutions.
