The first UK Acoustics Network (UKAN) Summer School organised by the UKAN Early Careers Group (SIG-ECG) will be held from the 6th to the 9th August, 2018, at Gregynog Hall in Powys, Wales. 

This is a great opportunity to extend your knowledge and make important connections in the field of acoustics. The focus is on the development of key skills in communication, networking, collaboration, entrepreneurship and teamwork, in addition to providing career development advice and information about funding opportunities. Training in signal processing and practical applications of frequency analysis will also be provided. Presenters include Professors and Readers from the University of Sheffield, the University of Bristol, the University of Southampton, University College London, and London South Bank University, and representatives from Thales, Dyson, Ultrahaptics, Brüel & Kjær and the Engineering Panel of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The meeting will cover topics including

  •               industry and commercial collaboration,
  •               writing funding proposals, business plans and papers,
  •               public engagement,
  •               career planning,
  •               professional development,
  •               entrepreneurship in research,
  •               signal processing, and
  •               practical applications of frequency analysis.

Who should attend?

Second and third year PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, early career engineers (1st or 2nd year in posts associated with Acoustics) and acoustical consultants and early career lecturers.

Cost

The fee for attendance is £125 plus a small Eventbrite fee. This fee covers accommodation and meals at Gregynog Hall. While the bulk of the costs incurred will be covered by UKAN, we are not able to reimburse participants for travel to Powys.

The nearest train station is Newtown Railway Station. A coach has been booked to transport attendees from Newtown to Gregynog Hall for a midday start on Monday 6th August and from Gregynog Hall to Newtown Station after event close on Thursday 9th August. The coach will leave the station at 11:30am sharp on Monday 6th August and will leave the venue at 12:15pm on Thursday 9th August. If you will require a cab from the train station to the venue or vice versa, please pre-book.

Outdoor activities have been arranged, so please bring your walking shoes.
