More info

In the past years, acoustic metamaterials have filled the press with exciting new effects, previously only expected from light, like sound that gets diffracted in unexpected directions or focused in a very tight spot.  They come with the promise of changing the way we have been designing and experiencing sound, taking inspiration from light. But what are acoustic metamaterials? Are they really the new guys in town? And, maybe more importantly, what can they do in practice and how far are we from applications?

In this seminar, young members of UKAN’s Special Interest Group (SIG) on acoustic metamaterials will address these questions by sharing some of their recent research, while keeping an eye on its applications. The talks will be introduced by Gianluca Memoli, who currently chairs the SIG and holds a UKRI fellowship focused on metamaterials applications (for Creative Industries) at the University of Sussex. The programme is:

12:30 – 12:45 Introduction (Gianluca Memoli)

12:45 – 13:35 Session 1: Gregory Chaplain (Imperial), James Hardwick (UCL), Karlos Angelis (Southampton)

13:35 – 13:45 Break & Discussion

13:45 – 14:35 Session 2: Zhiyuan Shen & Thomas Neil (Bristol), David Tatnell (Exeter), Name to be confirmed (Manchester)

14:35 – 14:50 Break & Discussion

14:50 – 15:00 Conclusions (Gianluca Memoli)
