How will we use and live with machines that can hear like us? Design research can help us understand this sort of question. Using case studies from the AI for Sound project, this talk focuses on the use of machine listening for indoor soundscape wellbeing applications and emphasises the importance of making AI centred around people’s needs to create empathetic, restorative, and engaging spaces.

Bio

As a design researcher in the AI for Sound project at the University of Surrey’s Centre for Speech, Vision, and Signal Processing, Thomas Deacon utilises participatory practices and creative methods to investigate the possibilities of AI in sound sensing and its downstream applications. I strive to understand how people use and are affected by new technologies, while also exploring how AI can enhance our soundscapes and well-being.
