Workshop on the NOAA Guidance on Underwater Acoustic Exposure for Marine Mammals

9 October 2018

The Royal Society, London

Stephen Robinson Report from Underwater Acoustic Exposure Workshop

Brandon Southall  The Evolution and Application of Exposure Criteria for Assessing the Effects of Anthropogenic Noise on Marine Mammals

Jakob Tougaard Application of NOAA Guidance in Europe

Organised by: UK Offshore Wind Programme Board, JNCC, and the UK Acoustics Network.

09.00 – 17.00

The workshop will provide a forum for an invited audience of underwater noise experts, regulators, statutory advisors and offshore developers to understand the evidence base detailed within the NOAA Technical Guidance for Assessing the effects of anthropogenic Sound on Marine Mammal Hearing (NOAA Guidance)  and best available scientific evidence to inform Environmental Impact Assessments and regulation when using thresholds for auditory injury and response in marine mammal species in the UK.  The workshop will focus mainly on piling and explosive decommissioning (for example, for unexploded ordnance) and the implications for such work in the UK. The workshop will feature expert speakers invited from the USA and a range of speakers from the UK and Europe. A detailed agenda will be available nearer the time.
