An opportunity exists for a research scientist or engineer to work within the underwater acoustics team at NPL. The job will involve the developing improved techniques for underwater acoustic measurement and calibration utilising NPL’s specialised laboratory facilities, and developing experimental techniques for ocean acoustic measurement. The successful candidates will play key roles in delivering NPL’s scientific work, including the delivery of measurement services and contributing to research and development projects.

The role:

We have a permanent position for a Research Scientist to work in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group within the underwater acoustics area. We are looking for early career scientist, ideally with experience of working in a commercial calibration laboratory or a test house. Strong understanding of Health and Safety and Quality is essential.

You will be directed by others to deliver technical activities using NPL knowledge and solutions for underwater acoustic measurement and calibration utilising NPL’s specialised laboratory facilities and equipment. The successful candidate will play key roles in delivering NPL’s scientific work, including the delivery of measurement services and contributing to research and development projects, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail. Travel for work may be required, for example to attend events or support trials project work at sea or similar.

An aptitude for precise experimental work is essential for the role, along with a good understanding of the underlying physical principles, as well as the ability to problem solve and propose appropriate technical solutions. In addition, it would be beneficial to have some knowledge of hardware operation and data analysis techniques, as well as experience of software packages such as Matlab and/or LabView. The successful candidate will have good communication skills, both verbal and written.

Strong personal motivation, business awareness, good communication skills, the ability to interact and network with existing and prospective collaborators and customers, and an ability to work to deadlines within a team are prerequisites for this role within our collaborative and motivated team.
