On Friday 10th March 2023, the Early Careers Special Interest Group (SIG-EC) is running a free in-person event for early career members of UKAN+ on Building a Career in Acoustics. The event will be held at Bloc, in Manchester city centre, and will include an optional tour of the facilities at the University of Salford. This is an event for early career members in any sector, whether active in research or not.
Speakers will include Professor Kirill Horoshenkov (Director of UKAN+), Professor Trevor Cox (University of Salford), Jo Webb, formerly Technical Director of Wood and a President of the Institute of Acoustics, Robin Langley, Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, Stefanie Edler-Wollstein, a Consultant within the Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre (PFDC) at Imperial College London, Stephen Turner, Immediate Past-President of the Institute of Acoustics and former Head of the Noise and Nuisance Technical and Evidence team at DEFRA, Elly Martin, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and WEISS Research Fellow at University College London, and Antonio Torija Martinez of the University of Salford and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Southampton.
The event will open with an optional tour of the University of Salford facilities led by Joshua Meggitt (for more information, see below). Subsequently, at Bloc, our speakers will give short talks on the topic of career development followed by a panel discussion, during which attendees can ask questions of the speakers. There will be time for one-on-one networking. The event will close with a social/networking session with drinks and nibbles.
The talks will be streamed via our UKAN+ Zoom account. To join us via Zoom, click here (available from 11am to 3.45pm). If a meeting ID and passcode are required, enter 884 2478 4163 as the meeting ID and 670826 as the passcode. Please note that the panel discussion will not be streamed. The slides will be made available via the Resources section of this website for members only (go to the Resources section and search for ‘Building a Career in Acoustics’). However, note that there is a 1-2 day delay before resources become available so they will be available in the week following the event.
Who is the event for?
The event is aimed at early career UKAN+ members in any area of acoustics-related work or study who want to improve their career or plan their career development, regardless of sector. It will also be an opportunity to meet our very successful speakers from different career stages and sectors and to engage in networking with other promising early career acousticians. You may be able to start a collaboration that will lead to pilot funding from UKAN+!
