The UKAN+ Physical Acoustics (PA) and Early Career (EC) Special Interest Groups are running a workshop on Careers in Acoustics at the Institute of Physics on Thursday 20th March 2025 from 9am until 4pm. This one-day workshop will bring together early career researchers and industry representatives in Acoustics and related fields. We will focus on career opportunities for PhD students, recent PhD graduates and EC researchers and provide an opportunity for industry to reach out to academic researchers. The morning session includes a plenary lecture by UKAN+ Director, Professor Kirill Horoshenkov, entitled “Acoustical Engineer: Academia and Industry” and invited talks from President of the Institute of Acoustics, Prof David Waddington, and industry and funding body representatives. These will include Andrew Bullmore, Hoare Lea; Jonathan Abra, Innovate UK; Tryfon Antonakakis, Multiwave Technologies AG; Daniel Amargianitakis, Rolls-Royce; Neha Sharma, Hoare Lea; and Suresh Palani, Airbus. The afternoon session will be dedicated to networking activities and a panel discussion with the speakers and a special guest, Naomi Tansey, Chair of IOA Noise and Vibration Engineering Group. You will be able to put questions to the speakers via our padlet here.
Programme
The provisional programme is available here.
Pitch talks
The EC participants (PhD students, recent PhD graduates and EC researchers) are encouraged to submit a short bid for a 3 to 5-minute pitch presentation on their research and its possible industrial applications (one paragraph in length) to the organisers for review. The bid should mention the name, position and affiliation of the EC researcher and summarise in one paragraph what research they do and what industrial applications it might have. The organising committee will review these bids and the shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their work during the workshop networking session. The presentation slides can be submitted in pdf or Powerpoint formats. Send bids to a.krynkin@sheffield.ac.uk by 20th February 2025 (opportunity now closed).
