Research Fellow – Aeroengine noise analyst

Organisation
University of Southampton

Location
UK

Closing Date
14 December 2021

More info

You will join University of Southampton’s Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Propulsion Systems Noise to develop methods for acoustic analysis of future aircraft engines. The goal of the fellowship is to develop techniques for attributing noise measurements to specific components or processes within the engine, and also to enhance modelling of the various noise sources within future engines. Measurement data will include phased array measurements, and the noise sources of particular interest include lean-burn combustion systems. A range of modelling techniques are envisaged including both physics-based and data-driven approaches. The work is in collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc., ensuring that the results of this work are robust and industrially-relevant.

We welcome applications from both junior and more senior researchers from a range of backgrounds consistent with the goals of the project. You will hold a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in mechanical/aerospace/acoustic engineering, or a related discipline, along with a strong computing background, and ideally experience in aeroacoustics.

This position is available from 4th January 2022.

You will be based within the School of Engineering’s Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics group, which provides a collegial environment with many opportunities to collaborate with other group members.

Your application should consist of a CV, publication list, completion of the online application form and optionally a cover letter. Two letters of reference are required with contact details to be provided on application (letter requests will be sent should your application be shortlisted).

Informal inquiries are particularly welcome. Please contact Dr Edward Richardson (E.S.Richardson@soton.ac.uk)

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.   Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
