PhD Studentship: Aeroacoustics Investigation of Drone/UAV Installation Noise at ISVR

Closing Date
31 August 2020

Supervisor: Chaitanya Paruchuri

Co-supervisor: Phillip Joseph

Project description

This project offers a unique opportunity to utilize advance measurement techniques and develop analytical methods in order to understand and predict the noise radiated from Drones. You will join the highly motivated researchers in the Acoustics group at the Institute of sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), which is recognised as one of the world’s leading centres for the investigation of sound and vibration phenomena.

The global interest in small multi-rotor drones, urban air-taxis and unmanned aerial vehicles is growing rapidly. Experts are currently predicting that the size of this sector is expected to quadruple by 2022. It is now widely accepted that noise is one of the main factors that could limit the public acceptance and adoption of drone technology.

The aim of this research project is to understand the noise generating mechanism of installed propellers and develop analytical models to predict it. The project will also extend to develop novel treatments to reduce the installation noise from drone systems.

Applications are invited from prospective UK/EU candidates with an excellent degree (or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University) in a relevant mathematics, science or engineering subject. Strong mathematical skills will be an advantage.

The studentship will be fully-funded including paid tuition fees (UK/EU rate).

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr. Chaitanya Paruchuri, Acoustic Research Group, Email: ccp1m17@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 9458.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.
