Current state of the art of industrial ultrasonic evaluation systems are not sensitive enough to detect the early stage of material degradation at the microscale level – due to there being insufficient change in either the geometry or material stiffness constants. To overcome these limitations, we propose using nonlinear ultrasonic techniques for the early detection of degradation in safety critical materials. The methods open a new dimension in the material evaluation – for example, by using third order stiffness constants which are highly sensitive to the early stage material degradation.
Our research programme is to translate nonlinear ultrasonic evaluation techniques from the laboratory to industrial settings by demonstrating the correlations between the nonlinear ultrasound responses during material degradation. We will enable prognostic maintenance and/or potential rejuvenation of structures, so addressing green industry challenges in a wide range of industries such as automotive, aerospace, defence, energy and civil infrastructure systems. The figure below illustrates schematically the research programme to translate nonlinear ultrasonic evaluation techniques from the laboratory to industrial settings. 3D modelling of nonlinear ultrasound and material degradation will support the development of novel evaluation methods for the safety critical materials.
The webinar will take one hour, including a 30 mins talk followed by a discussion. The round table discussion will follow the talk to: (ii) discuss potential nonlinear ultrasonic evaluation applications in industrial settings; (ii) identify requirements for the early detection of degradation in safety critical materials from the end-user perspective. The 30 mins talk will be recorded and made available to download after the webinar.
