Leverhulme Trust funded PhDs in Nature Inspired Acoustics 2025/2026
We are offering up to 7, 4-year PhD studentships in 2025/26 to talented, ambitious UK, EU and other International applicants. Studentships provide full tuitions fee, and a stipend of £19,795 per year. A £10,000 fund towards travel and consumable costs is also provided to each student within the programme.
Acoustics broadly involves sound waves and mechanical vibrations, and they have broad applications and societal implications spanning diverse disciplines from materials chemistry and electronic engineering to energy management and business. We are seeking multiple excellent students to join our new interdisciplinary Leverhulme Doctoral School in Nature-Inspired Acoustics and pursue a PhD with supervisors based across disciplines.
We welcome applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including physical sciences, engineering, architecture, business and psychology. The NIA School aims to draw on the foundations of all these disciplines to develop researchers with a unique set of future-oriented, interdisciplinary research skills and transform nature-inspired acoustics-based research. While some projects may focus heavily on a single discipline (e.g., 90% of research time), others may be more broadly interdisciplinary.
When applying for the programme, applicants should select their main research theme(s) of interest within the NIA School. These are:
- Bioinspired Chemistry & Materials Engineering
- Nature-Inspired Sensors & Devices
- Socially Intelligent Management of Built Environments
- Future & Foresight
Additional information on the programme, research themes and projects is available on the Leverhulme Doctoral School in Nature-Inspired Acoustics webpages – www.nia-leverhulme.org.uk.
Interdisciplinary Training
All students in the NIA School will undertake training carrying out interdisciplinary research, as well as in “Futures” and “Foresight” techniques from the first year to identify bottlenecks in established methodologies, plan research contingencies, and set goals and strategic directions of their projects under the supervision of NIA academics. The interdisciplinary training will be integrated with established professional skills training, including data management, entrepreneurship, project management and communications within the University of Strathclyde’s Researcher Development Programme.
Our programme is deeply committed to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). True innovation thrives in an environment where diverse perspectives intersect, challenge, and inspire one another. We actively seek candidates from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join the NIA doctoral school. Apply now and become a catalyst for positive change in your field and beyond.
The University of Strathclyde
The University of Strathclyde is the third largest university in Scotland, based in the heart of the vibrant city of Glasgow. Strathclyde is a research-intensive university, where our motto “a place of useful learning” lends a focus to everything we do.
Application Procedure
There is a 2-stage application process. Applicants should first complete our cover letter template (see www.nia-leverhulme.org.uk) and send it with a detailed CV to nia-leverhulme@strath.ac.uk. Applicants successful at the first stage will be invited to an online interview. Outcomes will be communicated by email in the week following the interview. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
Evaluations will start January 31st 2025.
