Presentation Overview
Prof. Peter Stollery will be presenting on two community-led sound mapping projects, one local (NE Scotland, https://www.livelifeaberdeenshire.org.uk/arts/soundmap) and one global (COVID19 Sound Map, https://tinyurl.com/covid19soundmap). Both will look at community engagement with sound through listening and reflecting.
Pete Stollery studied composition with Jonty Harrison at the University of Birmingham and was one of the first members of BEAST in the early 1980s. Following a number of years as a school teacher in Kent, he moved to Aberdeen to work in teacher education at the former Northern College which later merged with the University of Aberdeen. From 2000, he was part of the team which re-introduced music programmes at the University of Aberdeen, including the introduction of doctoral programmes in Composition and the development of the electroacoustic music studios. He was Head of the Department of Music for many years and he now works there part-time as Professor of Composition and Electroacoustic Music.
Martin Purdy – the Peak District Community project
Harp & a Monkey: An award-winning art, music, and storytelling collective whose work will interest soundscape researchers and those wishing to share their work and successfully involve communities in recording/contributing sounds for research projects/consultations. Their most recent project is Birdsong and Bells — the Peak Sound Project – an ambitious 12 minute film that illustrates the trio’s work perfectly. The film is a tapestry of over 300 field recordings made by members of the public who were responding to an invitation to close their eyes and engage with their everyday experiences in a different way – by listening to the sounds that surround them; from the mundane to the magical. Participants were asked to record what caught their attention on mobile phones and submit the items for inclusion in a larger sound collage.

The presentation will last 50 minutes, with 30 minutes for Q&A.
