Full time, fixed term for 12 months and 24 months in the first instance, with possibility of extension
Two Research Associate positions are available in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London within the Biophotonics group of Dr Chris Rowlands (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/rowlands-lab/). In keeping with lab policy, both posts are extendable, subject to good job performance and sufficient funding.
The post holders will contribute to projects in biophotonics and optical instrumentation, in collaboration with Prof. Ellen Sletten (UCLA), Dr Oliver Bruns (Helmholtz Zentrum München), Prof. Simon Schultz (Imperial) and Prof. Mengxing Tang (Imperial).
The 12 month post is to design and aid construction of a near-infrared multiphoton microscope with heterodyne detection. This role will involve optical and CAD design work, as well as some microscope construction. Occasional visits to Munich may be needed, to meet with collaborators. The role will also involve finishing up and writing papers for several almost-complete projects in the lab, so would be ideal for a candidate looking to rapidly supplement their publication record.
The 24 month project involves development of an optical system for creating and recording high-resolution acoustic signals in the body. This will require experience in CAD modelling, instrument construction and alignment, wavefront simulation, programming, and automation. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with acoustic engineers in the Imperial College Bioengineering Department, who will be responsible for ultrasound imaging aspects of the project.
For both roles, the applicant should hold, or be about to receive a PhD or equivalent, and have relevant skills and experience as described above. Researchers will be expected to play an active role in the group, writing papers and giving presentations, helping to write grant proposals, mentoring students and setting an example for others. The Rowlands lab has a policy of active career development, and you can expect strong support for fellowship applications, training and further advancement.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 – £38,566 per annum
