Research Fellow in Design Research for Sound Sensing at Surrey

Applications are invited for a 3-year Research Fellow in Design Research for Sound Sensing, to work full-time on an EPSRC-funded Fellowship project “AI for Sound”, to start on 1 August 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The aim of the project is to undertake research in computational analysis of everyday sounds, in the context of a set of real-world use cases in assisted living in the home, smart buildings, smart cities, and the creative sector.
The postholder will be responsible for participative engagement with domain experts and users, including conducting user requirements and evaluation studies on the project, both to drive the technology research, and to ensure successful development and application of the project technology. The postholder will be based in the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and work under the direction of PI (EPSRC Fellow) Prof Mark Plumbley.
The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD (gained or near completion) in Design Research, Human Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Service Design, or a closely-related discipline, or equivalent professional experience, and experience in conducting user requirements and evaluation studies. Research experience in human interaction with sounds, human auditory perception, or audio signal processing is desirable; as is experience in the use of participatory research methods, audio recording equipment or the deployment of sensors or similar devices. Interests related to noise and soundscapes and the role of sound in society, and in working with older people, is also desirable.
CVSSP is an International Centre of Excellence for research in Audio-Visual Machine Perception, with 125 researchers, a grant portfolio of £24M (£17.5M EPSRC) from EPSRC, EU, InnovateUK, charity and industry, and a turnover of £7M/annum. The Centre has state-of-the-art acoustic capture and analysis facilities and a Visual Media Lab with video and audio capture facilities supporting research in real-time video and audio processing and visualisation. CVSSP has a compute facility with 120 GPUs for deep learning and >1PB of high-speed secure storage.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,866) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,817).
