The University of Salford has one of Europe’s largest acoustic groups with 13 academics, 8 post-docs and 9 commercial scientific officers. It is a major contributor to training in acoustics and audio, having run courses in the subject since the 1970s. Its world-class laboratories are UKAS accredited for calibration and testing, and include transmission, anechoic chambers and listening rooms. It has a strong track record in providing innovative solutions for end-users (e.g., Dyson, Bentley, Boeing, BBC R&D etc), with a commercial turn-over of £0.6M/annum. The research group has been operating for over 60 years and has an annual research income of £0.7M. Acoustics contributed only a fifth of the staff submitted by Salford University to UoA 16 in REF 2014 and yet we were singled out by the panel; outputs showed ‘particular strengths in acoustics’ and there was ‘outstanding impact in acoustics for the built environment.’
The appointee will be primarily responsible for supporting Acoustical and Audio Engineering. Our learning community of students and staff is thriving and continually developing, with a research-informed and practical approach to teaching. Research and Teaching is supported by state-of-the-art facilities, both on our main campus and at Media City. This role will help develop and deliver our Acoustical and Audio Engineering programmes to provide our students with the best possible learning and experience for life beyond university.
The post-holder will contribute to and enhance our highly-regarded portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes in Acoustical and Audio Engineering. We have a long tradition of delivering accredited taught programmes underpinned by research, innovation and a strong engagement with the profession. The post-holder will need to identify current and future requirements and have a good understanding of their interface with other disciplines in the context of current national and global economic and environmental issues. Current staff are engaged at a local, national and international level with professional institutions, standards and regulatory bodies. The post holder would be expected to continue this tradition.
The post-holder will play an active part in the School’s research community, building on Acoustics’ international reputation for its research. They will be expected to develop collaborative research work through grant funding, research supervision and publication, to build an international reputation for their own research, which complements and enhances the group’s research activities. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to the University’s strategic aim of developing Industry Collaboration Zones (ICZ), which bring together academics, students, companies and third sector organisations to solve real world problems.
