This is a one-day course on the underlying principles, recent developments and practical applications in structure-borne sound generation and propagation. Whilst the emphasis is on building acoustics, applications to vehicles, white goods and aircraft are included.
The course centres on demonstrations of practical measurements and simplified calculations of the active source quantities, and passive source and receiver quantities, required for estimates of structure-borne power into supporting structures. This power is required for estimates of the radiated sound in spaces remote from the spaces containing the sources.
The course is primarily for practitioners, but is also available to researchers seeking an introduction to this topic. The laboratory-based program is limited to 20 delegates. The registration fee is £50.

Session 1 – Airborne vs. Structure-borne sources
 Air-borne sound sources: sound power and source-path-receiver prediction models.
 Equation for structure-borne power – from two source quantities (activity and mobility), combined with receiver mobility.
 Demonstration of measurement of source activity: free velocity
 Demonstration of measurement of source mobility – simple mass.
Session 2 – Receiver Structures
 Plate-like receiver structures in buildings.
 Demonstration: measurement of receiver mobility of heavyweight building elements.
 Prediction of receiver mobility of heavyweight elements.
 Demonstration: measurement of receiver mobility of lightweight building elements.
 Prediction of receiver mobility of lightweight elements.
Session 3 – Source Structures
 Source types in buildings.
 Source activity: free velocity or blocked force
 Demonstration: measurements of mobility of basic source types.
 Prediction of mobility of basic source types.
Lunch
Session 4 – Transmission Paths
 How source data provides input power into building and other structure models.
 Building modelling using Standard methods (EN 12354).
 Sources with multiple contacts and the single equivalent approximation.
 Demonstration: measurement of sound pressure due to source on a test room.
 Prediction of sound pressure in test room.
Session 5 – Back to Reality
 Vibration sources with isolators – return to the power expression.
 Isolator performance: transmissibility vs power insertion loss, for heavyweight and lightweight receiver building elements.
 Approximate vs precise approaches.
 The in-situ blocked force approach with example.
 Demonstration: measurement of sound pressure due to source with isolators on a test room.
