UKAN+ Annual Meeting 2024
The third UKAN+ Annual Meeting took place at the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School on Thursday 12th September 2024 alongside the Institute of Acoustics Conference 2024. There was a packed agenda for the day with a number of talks from UKAN+ members. Prof. Kirill Horoshenkov and Prof. Richard Craster gave an overview of UKAN through the years and highlighted key achievements of the network. Dr. Hasina Rahman talked about the Women in Acoustics podcast and we heard from members who benefited from UKAN+ funding. Some of the award winners gave presentations about the projects funded by the network and SIG leads gave talks about their SIG’s, including the Mathematical, Physical Acoustics and Noise and Soundscapes SIG’s.

We continued the day with an interactive discussion session ‘UKAN and the IOA’ facilitated by Dr. Stephen Dance. We used an app; mentimeter to interact with meeting participants. We asked a series of questions about the legacy of UKAN and the role of SIG’s. The discussions session went very well, there was some great participation and we obtained valuable feedback from UKAN members.
We ended the day with Prof. Kirill Horoshenkov presenting the award for best poster to Julia Tomaszewska for her poster: Comparative Analysis of MFCC and GTCC in Laryngeal Pathology Detection based on Electroglottographic Signals, followed by a drinks reception. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our participants, speakers, poster competition entrants and colleagues at the Institute of Acoustics for helping to make the third UKAN+ Annual Meeting a huge success!

European Summer School on Physical Acoustics and its Applications
16-20 Sep 2024 Cargèse (France)
MD Riaz Pervez, University of Bristol, UK
The European Summer School on Physical Acoustics and its Applications is a prestigious event held for the first time that brings together leading researchers, academics, and students from across Europe and beyond. Held in a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment, the summer school provides participants with a deep dive into the fundamental and applied aspects of physical acoustics and its application in various fields like biomedical, underwater bacterial tracking, tissue engineering and optics. The 2024 edition of the summer school, hosted by the Scientific Institute of Cargese, in Cargese, France, was a resounding success, further strengthening the program’s reputation for excellence.
One of the core objectives of the summer school is to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Through hands-on sessions, participants were able to engage with cutting-edge techniques, exploring how the principles of acoustics can be applied to solve real-world problems. This year’s program was particularly notable for its emphasis on emerging technologies in acoustics, including ultrasonic manipulation, acoustic holography, and high-resolution imaging.
The summer school boasted an impressive lineup of distinguished lecturers, each an expert in their respective fields. Among the keynote speakers were Professor Henrik Bruus, Monika Ritsch-Marte and Bruce Drinkwater, a leading authority on acoustic Physics and its versatile application in the levitation and manipulation field, and Dr. Selman Sakar an invited speaker, whose groundbreaking work in robot ultrasonics has paved the way for innovative swarm robotics and medical technologies. Professor Michael Baudoin delivered a compelling talk on the trending subject of “The physics of Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs) and their applications in microfluidics and surface cleaning” captivating the entire audience. In addition to theoretical lectures, the summer school featured a series of Experimental Demos & Roundtable Discussions where participants could gain practical experience in physical acoustics. These sessions covered topics such as ultrasonic transducer design, advanced acoustic imaging techniques, and applications of acoustic levitation. Participants were given the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing their understanding of how theory translates into real-world applications.
Participants had the chance to present their own research in front of a panel of experts, fostering a collaborative exchange of ideas. The poster sessions, in particular, provided a platform for emerging researchers to showcase their work, receive feedback, and network with senior academics and industry professionals.
A key feature of the summer school is its emphasis on collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Researchers from diverse fields such as physics, engineering, biology, and materials science came together to explore how acoustics can be applied across various domains. This interdisciplinary approach broadened participants' understanding and opened new avenues for research and innovation. My research focuses on acoustic tweezing and manipulation, and I have already connected with other researchers in this field on LinkedIn.
The 2024 edition of the European Summer School on Physical Acoustics and its Applications was a resounding success, offering participants a unique opportunity to learn, collaborate, and innovate. With a rich program of lectures, workshops, and networking events, the summer school continues to be a vital platform for advancing the field of physical acoustics. Participants gained not only a deeper knowledge of acoustics but also a refreshed enthusiasm for the potential the field offers for future research and practical applications. For those who missed this year’s event, the next edition promises to build on this success, offering even more opportunities to engage with the latest developments in physical acoustics.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for providing the travel grant for the European Summer School on Physical Acoustics and its Applications held at Cargese, France. The event was a fantastic opportunity, filled with both knowledge and enjoyment. The variety of speakers highlighted their exceptional work, greatly expanding my understanding of acoustics and its applications across numerous field. The demonstration of the on experiments surface acoustic waves, acoustic levitation and streaming was very amazing. The event provided an ideal setting, where each day began with insightful sessions and concluded over dinner in the company of researchers from institutions across Europe. I believe opportunities like these are invaluable for researchers like myself, and the support provided for such events is greatly appreciated, as it plays a key role in fostering growth and collaboration within the scientific community. At the end I would like to thank again the UKAN+ community for providing me the generous support.

Have your say on BS 4142: Defra Survey
In 2023, a research paper (Estimating BS 4142 Character Corrections at the Planning Stage, Torjussen, M., Webb, J., and Hoyle, P.,) was published by WSP, the University of Salford and ANV along with Defra, which suggested the use of an app and accompanying publicly accessible online database to assist with the determination of character corrections to support an assessment in line with BS 4142.
Therefore, Defra has commissioned WSP to carry out research on opinions on the production of an app and accompanying publicly available database to support assessments undertaken in line with BS 4142. We would like to hear your views and therefore invite you to take part in a voluntary 20 minute online survey. The survey will be open for 3 weeks and will close at 23:59 on 25th October 2024.
Please note that your answers are anonymous and will be treated in the strictest confidence and we will ensure that individuals will not be identifiable from the survey findings. The information will be used by the WSP research team for analytical and reporting purposes only. As part of this research, WSP will temporarily store, and process data provided by respondents and will do so in line with the WSP privacy policy, details of which can be found here: https://www.wsp.com/en-gl/legal/privacy-policy. All raw data will be deleted after completion of the project and publication of the report.
The research is being conducted in accordance with the Market Research Society Code of Conduct, (available here: https://www.mrs.org.uk/pdf/MRS-code-of-conduct-2023.pdf) and any information you provide will be handled securely in line with the UK Data Protection Act and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Any contact details you provide will be deleted after completion of this project and publication of the report. You have a right to have a copy of your data, change your data, or withdraw from the research at any point. If you’d like to do this, please contact the team at: BS4142Research@wsp.com
