UKAN Receives Peter Lord Award for Outstanding Innovation in Acoustics

We are very pleased to share that UKAN has been awarded the Peter Lord Award for Outstanding Innovation in Acoustics by the Institute of Acoustics (IOA). This award recognises UKAN's commitment to advancing innovative research and collaboration across the acoustics community. The award was presented to Prof. Kirill Horoshenkov, UKAN Director, by Prof. David Waddington, President of the IOA at the awards lunch, held at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh on Thursday, 8th May 2025.
We are also very happy to celebrate Prof. Simon Chandler-Wilde, who received the RWB Stephens Award for his outstanding work in promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within the acoustics community. Simon’s leadership in this area has had a lasting impact on UKAN and this recognition is very well deserved. Thank you and congratulations Simon!

EPSRC Sustainable Sound Futures CDT welcomes Industry Partners to shape the Future of Acoustics

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Sound Futures at the Universities of Salford, Sheffield, Southampton, and Bristol is inviting industry leaders to collaborate in shaping the next generation of acoustics research and innovation.

Through partnerships with businesses and organizations, the CDT offers opportunities to engage in PhD projects, funding initiatives, masterclasses, site visits, internships, and access to world-class research facilities. By working alongside doctoral researchers, industry partners can leverage cutting-edge research, contribute to training future leaders in acoustics, and gain early access to groundbreaking findings.

“Our collaboration with industry is essential in driving forward sustainable sound solutions,” said Professor Trevor Cox, EPSRC CDT Director University of Salford. “By partnering with us, organizations can play a pivotal role in advancing acoustics research while benefiting from direct engagement with top-tier academic expertise.”

The CDT provides two primary pathways for engagement: sponsoring a PhD project or supporting the CDT training programme. These partnerships enable businesses to collaborate with leading academic researchers, attend networking events, and contribute to the development of innovative sound technologies.

For more information on how to get involved, visit Sound Futures CDT or contact Professor Trevor Cox at see-soundfutures@salford.ac.uk.

About EPSRC CDT in Sustainable Sound Futures

The EPSRC CDT in Sustainable Sound Futures is a leading doctoral training programme dedicated to advancing acoustics research through collaboration with academia and industry. The CDT offers an unprecedented collaboration for doctoral training in Acoustics across four universities (Salford, Sheffield, Southampton and Bristol) and with the support of over 50 project partners.

Six PhD Chancellor Scholarships in Acoustics for September 2025

Institute of Professional Sound visit Acoustics Laboratory

On the 9th May 2025 London South Bank University offered six PhD Chancellor Scholarship in Acoustics for entry in September 2025. The School of Engineering and Design is pleased to announce this opportunity for international students, application submission by 30th June 2025. The projects include:
  1. Just noticeable difference for speech intelligibility
  2. A Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Driven Metamodel to Determine
  3. Acoustical and Thermal Performance of Buildings.
  4. Subjective investigation of heat pumps and their effect on human health.
  5. The design of sustainable structures incorporates composite panels to reduce CO2 emissions from buildings and attenuate noise.
  6. Data-driven acoustic design through robotic manufacturing
  7. New Technology for Audio, Acoustics and Hearing

On the 2nd May 2025 the Institute of Professional Sound visited the Acoustics Laboratory of London South Bank University. This was the final UKAN event, part of an outreach exercise to engage audiences away from acoustics. We hope the sound engineers enjoyed the half day event, which as is tradition, ended up with on-going discussions in the local beer garden!

Exploring acoustic and oceanographic data, including methods and tools

Date: Monday 23rd June, 9:30 - Wednesday 25th June 2025
Location: University of Bath, Campus Claverton Down BA2 7AY
Register: HERE

Come join us at the University of Bath for an exciting event delving into the world of acoustic and oceanographic data! This in-person gathering will showcase various methods and tools used in the field, providing valuable insights for enthusiasts and professionals alike. The Royal Society Exhibition 1-6 July 2025

The Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition 2025 will take place from 1–6 July at 6–9 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG. This free public event offers the opportunity to explore cutting-edge science through interactive exhibits and engaging talks. This year’s exhibition features 13 flagship exhibits, including two focused on acoustics:

Seismic Senses: from Spiders to Elephants: Exploring animal vibrations and how creatures like elephants and spiders use sound and vibrations to sense their environment.

Focused Energy: Extraordinary Ultrasound: Showcasing non-invasive therapies using ultrasound technology.

PhD opportunity: Better Personalization of Deep Learning-Enhanced Hearing Devices – Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID)

The project will explore a variety of methods to understand hearing device user preferences in more complex settings, including leveraging virtual reality (VR) to simulate diverse acoustic environments and hearing aid algorithms. VR offers the advantage of creating immersive and controlled scenarios where users can directly experience and evaluate different algorithmic configurations. This approach allows the systematic measurement of user preferences across a wide range of conditions, ensuring both ecological validity and experimental rigor. From this understanding new algorithm quality metrics will be derived for optimising existing deep-learning enhancement approaches in a more user-dependent manner.

This University of Sheffield PhD project is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Sound Futures programme. Further details about the CDT and the programme can be found on the CDT website https://soundfutures.salford.ac.uk/

Closing date: 12th June 2025
Organisation: University of Sheffield, Department Computer Science - RNID
Contract Type: Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)
