The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Sound Futures was launched at a UKAN+ event on Friday 1st November 2024.
This CDT, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, brings together the Universities of Salford, Sheffield, Southampton and Bristol to train 70 PhD students who have the skills and knowledge to reduce the harms caused by noise and poor acoustics and forge a more positive sounding future. The launch event brought together members of the CDT management board (shown in the image), many of the 50+ project partners and members of the Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Dame Ann Dowling.
The day allowed project partners and others to identify research challenges that the CDT should be tackling. Stakeholders also inputted on the training required to created rounded doctoral graduates who can create impact and a better sounding future.
The four research themes of the CDT are machine learning for sound, new sound sources, perception of sound by human and other animals, and positive uses of sound. Students will apply to study on particular PhD projects relating to these four themes, which will be driven by the needs of our project partners.

We are excited to announce the UKAN+ Celebration event which will take place in London on Wednesday 19th March 2025:
Date: Wednesday 19th March 2025
The event will take place in-person at Institute of Physics, London and will feature talks from experts in the areas of AI, Soundscapes, Sustainability and Ultrasound. Dr Andrew Lawrence, Head of Engineering at the EPSRC, will also join the event to talk about EPSRC strategy and role of UKAN.
The event will also include a session on other EPSRC-funded existing and recently launched Tomorrow Engineering Research Challenges (TERC) Networks.
There will also be an opportunity for participants to join the World Café to discuss industry and research challenges in acoustics. We will finish the day of celebrations with a drinks reception.

PA & EC SIG Workshop: Careers in Acoustics
The Physical Acoustics (PA) and the Early Career (EC) special interest groups of UKAN+ are organising a one-day workshop to bring together early career researchers and industry representatives in in Acoustics and related fields. We will focus on career opportunities for PhD students, recent PhD graduates and EC researchers and provide an opportunity for industry to reach out to academic researchers. The morning session includes a plenary lecture by UKAN+ director, Prof Horoshenkov, entitled “Acoustical Engineer: Academia and Industry” and invited talks from senior industry and funding bodies’ representatives.
The afternoon session will be dedicated to networking activities. The EC participants (PhD students, recent PhD graduates and EC researchers) are encouraged to submit a short bid for a 3 to 5-minute pitch presentation on their research and its possible industrial applications (one paragraph in length) to the organisers for review. The bid should mention the name, position and affiliation of the EC researcher and summarise in one paragraph what research they do and what industrial applications it might have. The organising committee will review these bids and the shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their work during the workshop networking session. The presentation slides can be submitted in pdf or Powerpoint formats. Send bids to a.krynkin@sheffield.ac.uk by 20th February 2025.
Please follow the link to the form here to register your attendance. Note that the number of attendees is limited and the form will be closed as soon as all places are filled. EC researchers are encouraged to apply for travel expenses funding from the EC SIG (please submit your application with UKAN Travel request form here before purchasing tickets and booking hotel as it needs to be approved first).

UKAN supports the UK Hearing Conservation Association Conference
On the 5th November 2024 the UK Hearing Conservation Association held their 3rd annual conference at the Birmingham Events Centre. UKAN supported the event and held their inter-SIG event involving Volkan Akun (Health and Wellbeing Champion), Chris Sumner (Hearing SIG), Stephen Dance (Communications SIG) and Ruben Vazquez Amos (Early Career Lead for Communication SIG). Mentimeter was used to get feedback from the audience on how UKHCA can engage with UKAN. To demonstrate the multidisciplinary nature of the challenges faced in hearing conservation the conference had presentations from a Lawyer, a Policy Maker, Government Enforcement, a Psychologist, a Behaviour Scientist, the Police, an Acoustician, a Noise Control Consultant, a Nurse, an Audiologist, and from a Marketing Expert. It was enjoyable and entertaining to hear all the different perspective of the issues raised at the meeting!

Underwater Acoustics Data Challenge Workshop 2025
The Special Interest Group for Underwater Acoustics (SIGUA) is holding a 2-day residential event at Guyers House, near Bath on 27-28 January 2025 to explore solutions to research challenges set by industry. This will be the third workshop, following two previous events in 2022 (Sheffield) and 2023 (Bath).
We will also be holding a virtual pre-event on Zoom from 13:00 to 16:00 on 10 December 2024. This will enable Challenge Leaders to introduce their datasets and provide early access, and for participants to get to know one another and organise into teams.
This is an opportunity to be exposed to some of the current and future challenges in underwater acoustics and to work together with other researchers, to explore and develop new/innovative solutions. This will be a ‘hackathon’ style event, with small teams working on one of the challenges together for most of the two days, while representatives from industry move between the groups to provide application context and to answer questions.
Overnight stays will include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Day attendees will be provided with lunch. A minibus transfer to/from Bath Spa train station will also be provided.
