Dear UKAN+ Member

Welcome to our October newsletter, a range of news from across our network reflecting and informing our community.

Funding Call 2 - Now OPEN

Funding information
Next funding call (Call 2) opened 8th September 2022 and closes 19th October 2022. Full details available on our website.
A one hour webinar in support of this call took place in June. The webinar provided prospective Call 2 applicants with information on what UKAN+ is looking for in its funding call and to also provide information on the application process. There will be two separate application forms: (i) for pilot research projects; and (ii) for knowledge transfer projects. More info about key differences between these projects in the webinar.

We are keen to see applications as PI reflecting the diversity of the membership of UKAN+. Particularly, we are keen to attract applications as PI from women, who were under-represented in the last round compared to their representation in the wider UKAN+ membership.

UKAN+ funded network project
EcoHacK
31 October - 2 November 2022
University of Stirling
We are very happy to introduce EcoHacK - UKAN+ funding allows for a free 3-day hands-on workshop on ecological sound recording analysis that will be held at the University of Stirling, Scotland.

With the advent of low-cost passive detectors and the recent development of new acoustic sampling methods, the collection of ecological sounds in the field has gained momentum amongst researchers and practitioners worldwide to answer key ecological questions. The analysis of sound recordings was traditionally done manually but quickly became a time-consuming process. To overcome this issue, acoustic indices have recently been developed to summarize the sonic environment. Furthermore, the use of sound recognition algorithms based on machine learning now allows to discriminate with high confidence specific sounds of interest. As these modern techniques are evolving rapidly, this workshop will provide an opportunity to work collaboratively on projects (hackathon format), learn, discuss, and exchange on state of the art methods in eco-acoustics.

IoA
Following the successful Acoustics Bulletin video Ep.1:Sound bending materials
the team at the IOA created Bulletin video 2, (which came out in January this year) and can be viewed on the IOA YouTube channel. Overall, the videos (combined and the individual interviews) have garnered over 70,000 views on YouTube so far this year and also achieved high visibility on the IOA website/social media/magazine.

The IOA are beginning work on the Acoustics Bulletin video 3 and are looking for interesting contributors to interview for this issue. The format will be the same as last year with a varied reach for anyone interested in acoustics.

To note your interest to volunteer please email acoustics-network@sheffield.ac.uk before 14th October 2022.
OptimUS: An open-source Python library for solving 3D acoustic wave
propagation
Pierre
Pierre Gélat, Elwin van 't Wout, Reza Haqshenas and Nader Saffari are happy to announce the first release of OptimUS, an open-source Python library for simulating linear acoustic wave propagation in an unbounded domain with multiple homogeneous scatterers.

Full details are available here.
The Physics of the Voice
WOMAD
The Physics Pavilion at World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) brings science to the festival. Neuroscientist Sophie Meekings, looked at how we produce our voice and how that gives rise to the acoustic properties of the voice, and moved onto how we modulate those different properties and how that relates to our perception. She also talked about the factors that change how well we understand speech and what that tells us about our neural processing. What makes Sophie’s research extra fascinating is that she is profoundly deaf.

A roller banner promoting Frontiers for Young Minds was displayed by Charlotte Swain at the last event in Charlton Park (28 - 31 July 2022). Flyers distributed, encouraging people to read articles showing the range of acoustics.

Sophie said of the event - "This was fun and I can really recommend it as a way to reach people that you might not normally talk to about your research. It led to some great conversations- both with members of the public who came to watch me talk, and with my university's professional services staff as I tried to explain why I needed to order 200 kazoos!"

Biomedical Catalyst 2022: Round 1 Industry lead R&D
Start 1 December 2022
Professor Stephen Dance is proud to announce a working group led by Audio 3 LTD and including Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, XED LTD, CHEAR LTD and London South Bank University have won an InnovateUK grant under “Biomedical Catalyst 2022: Round 1 Industry lead R&D”. The 3 year project, valued at £450,000, will deliver a music based audiometer for use in paediatric settings. This is desperately needed to establish the hearing acuity of children at the earliest possible stage. The industry lead project will build links between audiologists, product designers, acousticians and electrical engineers to help those that most need help.
Charlotte Swain is moving on to pastures new
Charlotte Swain
Charlotte Swain was EPSRC Acoustics Network Manager between November 2017 and March 2021. She has made a great contribution building the UKAN right from its inception. After April 2021 she was involved in public engagement and joint UKAN/National Parks project. Charlotte is now moving on to enjoy her personal life and hobbies.
She said in her farewell to UKAN; "I'm so impressed by the enthusiasm and engagement within the acoustics community. Acousticians are certainly a great bunch of people. Starting with this EPSRC Network was like setting a firework off. It's been a privilege and a lot of fun. It has been great meeting you :-) If I were a stick of rock I am sure the word 'acoustics are exciting and solve challenging issues', would appear in my core "

We wish Charlotte well in her new adventures.
