2020/21 was the first International Year of Sound, initiated by the International Commission for Acoustics, in response to UNESCO resolution 39C/49, as a celebration of sound and how it enters our lives in so many ways.

To celebrate the year of sound, a collection of articles were written by experts from the UK Acoustics Network and the International Year of Sound team. These articles explore the fascinating world of sound and how it benefits and causes problems to people, other animals, and our environment.

Centred around a single theme of research and hosted by researchers, all articles within Frontier for Young Minds Collections are freely downloadable and available as an eBook upon their completion.

Underwater SIG
In November 2021 the special interest group for underwater acoustics announced a competition for researchers entitled Research Soundings. Entrants to the competition were tasked to create a 30 second audio clip without the use of (human) speech that would represent research work they were undertaking, this was to be coupled with 150 words that would explain the audio entry. The submissions to the competition would be ranked on their creativity, clarity of the relationship between the sound and research and the quality of the explanation of the sound in their accompanying text

The winner was announced at the Underwater Acoustics PhD symposium that took place digitally in December, and all entries to the competition were played/displayed during the break in one of the virtual break-out rooms.

The winners of the competition are:
  • 1st place – Alfie Treloar, Dynamic complicated propagation modelling
  • 2nd place – Irène Mopin, The sound of the seafloor
  • 3rd place – David de la Haye, At the pond edge
From the SIGUA team we would like to extend a big congratulations to the winners, and a sincere thanks to everyone that made a submission. All of the entries to the competition made for compelling listens.

Entries to the competition will be available to listen to and read on the official SIGUA page.

Do you work with sound or audio and want to improve the breadth and impact of your public engagement work? Do you want to develop partnerships that can engage people meaningfully with your work? Apply for the UK Acoustics Network (UKAN+) Impactful Public Development Programme!

The Programme
Running from April 2022 – September 2022, this dynamic six-month professional development opportunity will bring up to 40 members of the UK Acoustics Network (UKAN) together to develop their public engagement work. The programme is designed and facilitated by the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) and involves a range of contributors from inside and outside of higher education. It will cover all aspects of designing effective public engagement programmes, from developing an appropriate approach to evaluating its impact.

There is no fee to participate in the programme.

Applications are open to members of the UK Acoustics Network. Membership to UKAN is free and open to any researcher, practitioner or end-user in acoustics, giving access to the entire pool of acoustics expertise across the UK. Sign up to UKAN.

Applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experience are encouraged. We will seek to select participants to ensure a balance of different perspectives, disciplines, expertise, and affiliations, spread across UKAN’s remit, including those from university, industry and the third sector.
Submit your application by 16:00 on Monday 14th March.

We seek to make our programmes fully accessible to all. The application form includes a space to outline any accessibility requirements you might require. Please do get in touch should you wish to discuss this with a member of the team.

Feel free to forward to colleagues who might be interested and would benefit from this opportunity.

Frontiers 2022: Noise, Blazes and Mismatches
Frontiersv2
Since 2016, UNEP’s Frontiers Reports have cast a spotlight on emerging environmental issues. This year’s edition, Noise, Blazes and Mismatches, looks at three concerns: urban soundscapes, wildfires and phenological shifts.

Francesco Aletta, from UKAN+ Noise and Soundscape SIG authored one of the 3 chapters, his chapter titled Listening to Cities: From Noisy Environments to Positive Soundscapes draws attention to noise pollution and its long-term physical and mental health impacts, along with measures that can be implemented to create positive and restorative soundscapes in urban areas.

UKAN+ supported Francesco with financial assistance with feedback and a one-to-one session for the first draft of the chapter with Elaine Massung.

We are looking to plan our schedule advance. Please email if you are interested in hosting a UKAN+ Zoom webinar. z.hunter@acoustics.ac.uk
UKAN+ can support travel costs to individuals who have exhausted all other options. If you are looking to attend an event, perhaps such as the 51st International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering, being held in Glasgow it maybe possible for your travel costs to be funded. Application should be made here . If approved, you will be required to arrange your own travel arrangements and then claim back the costs. Contact Zoë Hunter for the relevant expense claim form.

Forum Laboris

Are you looking for a job or internship in acoustics?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many young students have not been given the opportunity to visit conferences and social events, which have always played a crucial role in preparing for one’s future career. To aid these students, the YAN and EAA are organising a great chance to meet companies and labs at “Forum Laboris”, the job fair of the European Acoustics Association. This will take place from 16 May to 19 May 2022. The event will be hosted online on Gather.town (https://www.gather.town/).
Early bird deadline: 04 April 2022

It is highly recommended to provide CVs, presentations and even video recordings upon registration. If you need any help with that, feel free to contact the YAN at yan@euracoustics.org and ask for help.
You can find more information on the website: https://euracoustics.org/products/forum-laboris/
